Alecto has been actively involved in advocacy to help address some of the unintended consequences of the new RACGP Specialist PEP program. GPs who need to remain in the cities because their partners/spouses are highly skilled professionals, cannot be recognised as GPs in Australia.
This story published by Australian Doctor (a copy is below) highlights impact on families with small children who cannot move to the country. In these cases, GPs may have to choose between their career and their family because it is not possible to commute to an approved location.
These GPs have been recognised as ‘substantially comparable’ to Australian GPs because they have Specialist qualifications from the UK, Ireland or New Zealand. They have the capacity to make a positive contribution to the Australian community but are not allowed to practice as GPs.
