Frequently asked questions for GP Jobs with
19AB Academic Exemption

Will I be paid for teaching?

Absolutely! The practice will receive $400 per day which will then be split with the teaching GP – usually in the same proportions of your % of billings – or as agreed with the practice owner. For example, if your billings are 70%, you would receive $280 for the day.

Will the students be able to actively assist with patient care?

Yes, all medical schools encourage ‘hands on’ learning – provided you have assessed that it is safe to do so. For example, they can help with history taking or assist with procedures.

Do patients mind having a student present?

Most patients see it as a privilege to contribute to the next generation of doctors. Particularly, older patients might enjoy giving their medical history to a student who has plenty of time to listen. Most patients will also perceive that only the best GPs are teaching medical students and will see your involvement as a positive.

Can I choose my student rotations?

Yes, prior to the beginning of the semester you will be asked what rotations you would like to commit to. Obviously you will need to be available for those times, but if you are away for a day while the students are there, other colleagues can fill in and help.

Do I need to work full time?

You need to work at the teaching practice for at least 3 days/week in order to be considered for teaching positions.

Do students need to spend all their time with me?

No, you may want to ask them to do research tasks on their own. All the universities currently encourage students to be exposed to a multidisciplinary team, so they can spend time with a practice manager, pharmacist, physiotherapist – or anyone else that is contributing to the care for the patients.

What is your feedback from GPs already in the program?

Without exception, all the GPs we have worked with say they enjoy the teaching and find it stimulating. They enjoy the interaction with students and love seeing the students develop new skills.

Will this slow me down and result in lower billings?

Over the years working with many GPs in this program, we have never heard GPs report reduced earnings, and in fact some report they have earned more. All the student billings will be added to your billings.

Will I still be restricted by 19AB on where I can work?

Some of the teaching positions available can help you circumvent restrictions with regards to 19AB. It is subject to your success in being appointed as a clinical teacher. Further checks and approval by relevant statutory bodies will be necessary to determine whether you can work outside the boundaries of your 19AB restrictions.

Disclaimer: All information provided on this program is general in nature and may differ depending on the individual GP, the practice setting and the relevant university – as well as a range of other factors. Entry into the program is restricted and it is not possible to predict the outcome of your application.
