Continuing undersupply of GPs
Fears of an oversupply of GPs in Australia are not justified. Martina Stanley, Director of Alecto Australia, has written a letter to the RACGP President Dr Bastian Seidel explaining that despite the news items and statements of late, we are in fact experiencing an undersupply of GPs. We do not believe that it would be in the interests of the Australian community to stop overseas trained doctors from coming to Australia.
The reality is we have a continuing undersupply of qualified VR GPs:
- We get daily requests from clinics in metropolitan and outer metropolitan areas who need help sourcing a GP.
- Many clinics in less ‘desirable’ locations can go months or even years looking for a GP leaving the community without primary care services.
- Some metro clinics in WA for example, cannot allow their GP to take leave because they have only one doctor.
- There are no Australian GPs being unsuccessful in finding suitable positions. Every Australian GP with a clear registration record is able to select from a range of positions.
