No, we’re not talking about The Shire in Lord of the Rings. The Shire generally refers to the Sutherland Shire – a local council area approximately 26 kilometres from the Sydney CBD.

The Sutherland Shire consists of approximately 220,000 people with sizeable population growth occurring due to the opening up of new residential developments. Of course, with new housing, comes new infrastructure and the local Council has a diverse range of projects planned to enhance the liveability of The Shire.

General recreation

Sutherland Shire, like much of Sydney, has a multitude of interesting sights to see and fun things to do whether it be for adults, or for children. With the Royal National Park on your doorstep, you can enjoy bike rides and hiking in the second-oldest national park in the world. The hiking trails provide extraordinary variety with more than 20 popular park walks . There is nothing quite like getting out in nature to provide that work-life balance we all aspire to. For something extra special, you can catch the oldest ferry running to a timetable in Australia www.cronullaferries.com.au, which will take you from Cronulla across to the Royal National Park, or provide an opportunity to relax on a scenic river cruise or enjoy a swanky breakfast or dinner cruise – so many choices to help you wind down from a busy working week.

Coastal living

And let’s not forget the beaches! Cronulla is well-known for having the longest continuous stretch of beach in Sydney. Beaches are patrolled all year round and there is a beautiful family-friendly sea pool at Shelly Beach. Whether you’re a surfing fanatic, just like to dip you toes in the water, or prefer long walks along the beach, spending time in Cronulla is akin to being on holidays.

General Practice opportunities

The Sutherland Shire is home to many General Practices and is well-known for the loyal patient base who support these practices. Strong referral networks exist, with the St George Hospital located just a short distance north of The Shire. For GPs re-locating from overseas, The Shire offers an ideal location to establish your family in suburbs such as Engadine, which is approximately a 40 min drive to Wollongong, the third largest city in NSW. Alecto has developed strong links with GP practices in the Wollongong area, where we can offer a variety of practices within a large DPA geographical location. GP roles in this area are therefore perfectly situated to enable you to establish your life in Sydney whilst minimising your travel to a suitable DPA location for your career.

Family considerations

The Shire boasts a large number of quality schools to choose from should you be re-locating with your family from interstate or overseas. The private schools directory outlines numerous high quality education facilities, which exist alongside many public schools and child care centres.
