What is the PEP Specialist Pathway?

The RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway is a pathway to Fellowship for specialist international medical graduates who hold a recognised overseas specialist general practice qualification.

The RACGP first completes a comparability assessment to determine whether an applicant is:

  • Substantially comparable (can work in a MM1 location)
  • Partially comparable (must work in a MM2+ location, and pass exams)
  • Not comparable

The complete RACGP process includes three main stages:

  1. Part A: Comparability assessment
  2. Part B: Job offer approval
  3. Part C: Right to work assessment

This service focuses on helping you prepare your Part A comparability assessment application.

For a detailed explanation of eligibility, qualifications, costs, assessment outcomes and the complete process, read our complete guide to the RACGP PEP Specialist Pathway.

Why is the Part A application difficult?

Part A requires more than completing a form and uploading your qualifications. You need to present evidence from different employers, referees, training organisations and healthcare systems. That evidence must be clear, consistent and relevant to what RACGP requires.

Recency of practice

Before you invest time in preparing your application, we review your recent clinical experience to identify whether you appear to meet the recency of practice requirements. We also identify employment gaps, timing issues and evidence that may need further explanation.

Continuing professional development

CPD records can be difficult to present when certificates and activities come from different countries or professional systems. We review your evidence and create a structured summary of your CPD events, making your professional development easier to understand.

Letters of support

Effective letters of support must meet the relevant requirements while remaining genuine and individual. Giving every referee the same template can make the letters appear formulaic. Giving no guidance at all can mean important information is omitted. We provide a letter of support strategy, review draft letters and recommend changes, so each letter stays authentic while addressing what your application requires.

What is included in our PEP Part A support?

Your application support includes:

  • An initial review of your recency of practice
  • CV review and a 15-minute consultation with Louise
  • Templates, examples and document guidance
  • Advice about the timing of your application
  • Review and summary of your CPD events
  • A personalised letter-of-support strategy
  • Guidance about equivalent documents from different jurisdictions
  • EPIC and AMC portfolio guidance
  • Support with RACGP questions or requests for further information
  • Review of your PEP Part A application prior to submission
  • Assistance finding a suitable Australian GP position once your outcome has been received
  • Review of your PEP Part A application prior to submission (with the option to add Louise as a collaborator to your PEP Part A application).

You can also ask related application questions throughout the support period.

Reduce avoidable RACGP feedback

It is common for applicants to receive questions or requests for additional information from the RACGP. We cannot guarantee that the RACGP will approve your application or will not ask for further evidence. All assessment decisions are made independently by the RACGP.

Our role is to minimise avoidable feedback by helping you:

  • Identify missing information
  • Resolve inconsistencies between documents
  • Present your CPD clearly
  • Prepare stronger letters of support
  • Explain your clinical and employment history
  • Submit a more complete application

If the RACGP requests further information, we help you understand the request and prepare your response promptly. Support is limited to 24 hours in total through the process.

Common Questions about the PEP Specialist Pathway

Common questions about the PEP Specialist Pathway and how our support works.

Do I need to pay the RACGP the $12,525 program fee when I apply?

No. The initial RACGP comparability application fee is only $605 AUD, and your outcome will determine where in Australia you can work, and if you will be required to pass exams to receive FRACGP. The $12,525 program fee is payable later, after securing a job and close to the time of arrival, and only if you proceed with a move to Australia.

Who can apply for the PEP Specialist Pathway?

The pathway is intended for specialist international medical graduates with a recognised overseas specialist qualification in general practice. Eligibility and comparability are determined by RACGP based on each applicant’s qualifications, training, clinical experience, recency of practice and supporting evidence. You can find more eligibility information in our PEP Specialist Pathway guide.

Does Alecto Australia guarantee a successful comparability outcome?

No. RACGP independently determines every applicant’s eligibility and comparability outcome. Alecto Australia helps you prepare a clear, complete and well supported application but cannot guarantee approval or a particular outcome.

Will you check my recency of practice?

Yes. We review your recency of practice at the beginning of the service so that potential concerns can be identified early.

Can you help with CPD and letters of support?

Yes. We review and summarise your CPD evidence and help you develop a personalised strategy for your letters of support.

Is the RACGP application fee included?

No. The RACGP comparability assessment application fee is separate and is not included in our service fee

How does the $580 placement rebate work?

If we successfully introduce and place you in an eligible Australian GP position and you commence work, you receive gift vouchers to the value of $580, a $290 gift card of your choice on arrival into Australia, and $290 on commencement of work.

What does it mean if I am assessed as substantially comparable?

A substantially comparable outcome means RACGP considers your training and experience close enough to a FRACGP qualified GP that you can work in a Modified Monash Model 1 location, including major cities, without being required to sit RACGP exams. You will still need to meet other requirements, such as AHPRA registration, before you can practise in Australia

What does it mean if I am assessed as partially comparable?

A partially comparable outcome means RACGP has identified gaps between your training or experience and the requirements for FRACGP. You will be required to work in a Modified Monash Model 2 or higher location and pass RACGP exams to achieve Fellowship. Your specific location restrictions and exam requirements depend on your individual assessment outcome. Full detail is available in the official RACGP Participant Handbook for the Partially Comparable Stream.

Do I need to work in a DPA with the PEP Specialist Pathway?

As you trained outside Australia, you will need to meet the requirements of Section 19AB of the Health Insurance Act to access Medicare benefits. This typically means working in a Distribution Priority Area location, unless you qualify for another recognised 19AB exemption. Your specific obligations under 19AB are separate from your RACGP comparability outcome, and we can help you understand how the two requirements interact when planning your move.

What is the PEP Part A comparability assessment?

The PEP Part A comparability assessment is the process RACGP uses to assess international general practitioners who are partially comparable to the Australian general practice curriculum. It confirms what further training or exams you need before you can register in Australia. See our full guide to medical doctor registration pathways for international medical graduates for an overview of every route.
