Average GP Earnings Continue to Rise
GP earnings have continued to grow steadily since 2021, reflecting both increased demand for GPs and the shift away from full bulk billing.
The Shift Toward Mixed Billing
Only 12% of GPs now fully bulk bill, while over two-thirds use mixed billing models. This marks a strong and continuing trend toward private billing, driven by financial sustainability and patient demand for higher-quality consultations. Nearly half of GPs said they would consider leaving their practice if it switched to full bulk billing, a clear message for policymakers and practice owners alike.
Work–Life Balance and Flexibility
The traditional “full-time” GP role remains strong, but more doctors are choosing flexibility:
60% of full-time GPs work 4 days or 8 sessions per week
37% of part-time GPs report 4–5 weeks of annual leave
Many GPs now work across 2–3 days per week
Despite fewer sessions, part-time GPs report strong proportional earnings, suggesting improved remuneration per session compared to previous years.
