What could you buy with $1.1 million around Australia

With a budget of $1.1m (the median house price in Sydney), we compared properties in all capital cities using the following checklist:

  1. Areas where GPs like to live
  2. Within 8km of the CBD
  3. Close to a beach, river or lake
  4. Suburbs with the best amenities
  5. Near good GP jobs

Here’s what we found you could buy with a budget of $1.1m in different locations when we looked at the prices of homes that sold recently (advertised prices can be misleading).

Sydney – a reasonable apartment

(Median house price $1.1m)*

  • Coogee: 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment for $1.1 – see here 
  • Bronte: 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment for $1.1 – see here

* In Bronte and Coogee in Sydney, there were no houses or townhouses in this price range, only apartments

Melbourne – a townhouse or a small house

(Median house price $795,000)

  • Albert Park: 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom house sold for 1.1 million on a small block – see here
  • Prahran: 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom townhouse sold for 1.1 million on a small block – see here

Perth – a large, free-standing house

  • Wembley: 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom sold for $1.1 million – see here

Brisbane – a very large, free-standing house

(Median house price $541,000)

  •  Carindale: 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom sold for $1.1 million – see here

Adelaide – a large house
