What is PRODA and how does it affects  DWS Exemptions?

Late 2017, Alecto Australia was given a walkthrough of the PRODA (Provider Digital Access) system at a recent AMRANZ conference.

The best part is that PRODA now allow GPs to apply for standard DWS exemptions online! This only applies to additional provider numbers and if the GP is working in a DWS area, it will make the process much easier and faster. The department is currently working on a way to allow other 19AB exemptions to be applied for online, we will let you know once this is possible

The benefits of PRODA

  • Most provider numbers will be issued within 2-3 days
  • You do not need to renew your PRODA account – it only is required to be setup once
  • You don’t need to install any specific software
  • You don’t need to wait for any CDs or letters etc.
  • It is portable and can be accessed anywhere
  • Additional provider number DWS exemptions can be applied for through this!

From the PRODA system, you can search and manage provider numbers and prescriber numbers. Once logged in you can also submit provider number applications online. Although Alecto has not tested this system, we understand that unrestricted GPs can easily apply for new provider numbers through this system. However, those needing a 19AB exemption should still be sent to Medicare and the Department of Health as per normal to avoid any difficulties.

You can keep updated on your applications status and letters usually received in the mail advising of the new provider number will now be accessed through your online account.

The PRODA authentication system replaces the currently used PKI Certificates. As part of the transition from PKI Certificates to PRODA, all health professionals will need to create an account to access Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).

If you are a new user to HPOS you will no longer need to obtain the PKI Certificate as you will go straight onto the new PRODA system.

This system is new and the Department of Health are continuously updating the system to allow more options to be available.
